3 Simple Changes You Can Make to Reduce Your Impact On the Environment – Today!

earth day

Happy Earth Day everyone! Hopefully that’s every day, but I know how easy it is to get caught up in life and forget about the amazing planet on which we live. Every year when this day comes around I start to think about what changes I could make. Here are some of the things that I have come up with that can help you reduce your impact on the environment.

Change Your Attitude

First off, let’s take a look on our attitude toward this thing we call “the environment.” What is it exactly? The air we breath. The ground we stand on. Basically everything around us and all that we know. We cannot live without it but it can most certainly live without us. It’s really hard to reduce something so grand into two words and when we try, it can be easy to forget how grand it is! So remembering what we’re actually trying to save can help us adjust our attitude from one of apathetic dismissal or “blissful” ignorance to one of purpose and action. Let’s show some gratitude for being here, in this incredible world and treat our home with some respect! When we have respect for a thing we are much more likely to do what is necessary.

Vote with Your Dollar

Every day we choose what we products we will purchase, consume and support with our hard-earned dollars. Now that we’ve gotten in touch with our attitude about “the environment” let’s start to think about what impact our purchases have on the world around us. In the United States, 70% of the grain grown is fed to farmed animals. To produce one pound of animal protein vs. one pound of soy protein, it takes about 12 times as much land, 13 times as much fossil fuel, and 15 times as much water. (source: ChooseVeg.com) If we’re serious about reducing our impact, an easy way to affect change is through our daily actions and down to every single thing that we buy. It’s not all or nothing! If you aren’t ready to go vegan or need a little help, perhaps take the Meatless Monday challenge, check out my vegan recipes and start thinking before you reach for something in the grocery store. Every choice adds up.

Educate & Communicate

Take the time to learn the facts about the greatest threats to this beautiful planet. Do some research and educate yourself on the issues and then help spread the word! Watch documentaries and videos online, read books, follow blogs and engage with people on social media. When I first went vegan, I wanted to shout my newfound knowledge from the rooftops but I was also timid to start conversations with people for fear of confrontation. Learning some effective communication techniques can really help to have positive interactions with others about important but sometimes touchy subjects. The worst thing we could do is sit back and remain silent about the horrible things that we are doing the planet. Once we’ve realized how important we each are to this movement and how we each have a role to play – we can take it a step further by helping to get others to invest their efforts as well.
