Antarctica's Adélie penguins are facing a dire situation due to the changing climate and its impact on their diet. These seabirds, which nest in large colonies and rely on a variety of ocean resources, are now struggling to adapt to a warming world. The study, led by Casey Youngflesh, an assistant professor at Clemson University, reveals that Adélie penguins eat more fish when there is more sea ice and more krill when the sea ice is lacking. This is concerning because penguin colonies that relied more heavily on krill were doing worse than those foraging fish. Global warming is causing sea ice to decline, pushing penguins towards a more krill-based diet, which is not ideal for their survival. The research, published in Current Biology, used 30 years of satellite data and hand-scooped poop samples to understand the inner workings of the Antarctic ecosystem. The idea of using faeces stains to find penguin colonies isn’t new, but Youngflesh and the team wanted to go a step further. They colour-matched the poo to discover what the penguins have been eating, finding that penguins eat shrimp-like crustaceans called krill, which have bright pink exoskeletons that turn the penguins’ poop pink, as well as silverfish, which produce whiter guano. The study also revealed that penguins aren’t the only animals eating krill and silverfish; whales, seals, and other creatures also devour these key food items. Changes in the sea ice, which is declining, impact the abundance of these food sources. As the ice melts, there will be fewer silverfish, and the Adélie penguins rely more heavily on krill. This is a problem because penguin populations that are eating more krill are more likely to be in decline. The silverfish are higher quality food because they are more calorie dense. The study also highlights the importance of reducing carbon emissions and avoiding products that contain krill to help protect the Adélie penguins. The research is a crucial step in understanding the complex ecosystem of Antarctica and the impact of climate change on its wildlife.
