Recently during one of my Instagram-athons, as I call the times when I get sucked into Instagram for an unjustifiable period of time, I stumbled upon a post from Coco Jack, a “safe, easy way to open Young Thai Coconuts.” I’ve always wanted to learn how to open young thai coconuts but it seemed so hard! I knew I had to get my hands on one and they generously offered to send me one so I could try it out.
When my Coco Jack arrived I was so excited to learn how to use it, which was super easy due to their helpful videos. It took less than 30 seconds to open the coconut, though I did feel like I had to hit the thing pretty hard quite a few times. As the video explains, always do this on a stable surface because you are essentially hammering the coconut! The kit I received including a shock-absorbing pad (my husband thought it was a Coco Jack mouse pad lol!), which helps to protect the working surface.
Drumroll please…does the Coco Jack really work?
Opening the coconut was very easy compared to the one previous experience I’ve had! Let me tell you, I was more than thrilled when I pulled the top back and saw the opening brimming with coconut water. I threw my straw in, as pictured above, and the fresh coconut water was so refreshing and amazing! As seen in the picture below, I was able to get about 1 cup of coconut meat and 1 and a 1/2 cups of coconut water from one coconut, which I used for my first coconut recipe for my upcoming Coconut 3 Ways: Sweet, Savory and Smooth series.
There is definitely something empowering about being able to access fresh, whole ingredients that I find so motivating and special. The feeling is similar to my experiences planting a garden, watching the vegetables grow and being able to harvest them. It’s like magic! This world is definitely a magical place
Adventures with Coconuts
My enthusiasm for fresh coconut has now set me off on a coconut adventure. I will be creating three different recipes using young thai coconuts in order to illustrate just how versatile coconuts can be and also to show how easy it can be to incorporate this healthful, delicious fruit into your diet. Keep an eye out for my Coconut 3 Ways: Sweet, Savory and Smooth posts to join me on my adventures with coconuts.
